Sandy Beach (4) and Mannion Bay have always been at the centre of Bowen Island history. First Nations visited for millennia. One of the first homesteads was here. It was the heart of the resort culture of the 20th Century. Sandy Beach has hosted bathers for decades. Here’s a special presentation showing some of its colourful history. Based on 1937 map.
The Bowen Heritage Trail is a route with several stops in a circle around the Snug Cove area. At each stop you can access a page of photos and highlights from Bowen's history. The map we're using (above) is from 1937, so a few older sites such as the Davies General Store don't appear on it.
This digital heritage trail is based on the original walking tour pamphlet developed by the Bowen Island Heritage Preservation Association in 1997 in cooperation with the Greater Vancouver Regional Parks Department. Founded in 1989, BIHPA is a non-profit community association that initiates and oversees projects that identify and preserve heritage resources on Bowen Island. We are grateful for their financial and material support.
